Performance against the Mining Charter Scorecard
In September 2010, the revised Mining Charter scorecard came into effect, and the Group’s progress in achieving these goals is included in this report. It is a requirement of the MPRDA that mining companies convert their old order mining and prospecting rights to new order rights. Before the DMR grants conversions, however, these companies have to meet a number of socio-economic conditions which are set out in the Mining Charter. These are assessed against the Mining Charter’s Scorecard. Applications for conversions must therefore be accompanied by a Social and Labour Plan (SLP) which sets out the ways in which the provisions of the Mining Charter will be met. All Petmin’s South African operations have SLPs in place. Status of mineral rights Somkhele was granted a mining right conversion over Areas 2 & 3 in February 2011, which is valid for 20 years. A new order mining right for Area 1 was granted in June 2007 and is valid for 30 years. Somkhele holds prospecting rights over Areas 4 and 5, these were successfully renewed in June 2010 and are valid for three years. SamQuarz’s mining right conversion was granted in April 2009 and is valid for 30 years. Veremo submitted its mining right application over its prospecting right area in November 2010 and is awaiting approval of this application. New prospecting rights were granted over Veremo’s Onverwacht farms in Limpopo in 2010. These farms are contiguous to the five farms currently under mining rights application. Employment across the Group At 30 June 2011, Petmin employed 1,048 people. The majority of employees (68%) at SamQuarz come from the communities surrounding the mine. Somkhele is situated in the Mpukunyoni Traditional Area which falls within the boundaries of the Hlabisa Municipality. Approximately 80% of employees are from the local communities, with the remaining 20% predominantly from other areas of KwaZulu-Natal Province. At 30 June 2011 there were 53 women (11%) employed in mining related activities at Somkhele and 23 women (7%) at SamQuarz. Number of employees at 30 June 2011
