Ian Cockerill was appointed Executive Chairman with effect from 1 July 2010, having served as a non-executive director from October 2007 and as an executive director from 1 March 2010. From June 2008 to December 2009, Ian was the Chief Executive Officer of Anglo Coal. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields Limited from 2002 to 2008, having joined that company as Chief Operating Officer in 1999. During his years at the helm of Gold Fields, the company became a producer of gold in four countries around the globe, concentrating on large, high-quality, long-life assets. Ian’s history with Anglo American dates back to 1981 with various managerial positions held mainly in the Gold and Uranium Division, later AngloGold Limited. Between 1996 and 1999, he was Executive Officer, Business Development and African International Operations for AngloGold. He has more than 35 years’ experience in the global resources industry.
Ian is also Chairman of Leadership for Conservation in Africa, a not-for-profit initiative in partnership with the South African Parks Board, global business leaders and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, whose aim is to stimulate conservation and lead sustainable development across the African continent. He is a well-rounded and seasoned natural resource sector executive, with extensive global experience in mining operations, project development, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and leadership across a variety of commodities. He has a proven track record of team-building, delivery, growth and value accretion.
Lebo Mogotsi was appointed a non-executive director from January 2004, becoming an executive director and Deputy Chairman of the Company on 30 November 2005. She is also the chairman of the Board’s Transformation Committee and is responsible for risk management across the Group, stakeholder relations and corporate affairs. She has served on a number of boards including Merafe Resources Limited.
Lebo has more than 10 years’ experience in the mining industry, which started in gold beneficiation with AngloGold Ashanti Limited where she held two portfolios: Marketing Manager: Beneficiation and Executive Assistant to the Executive Director: Marketing.
Jan du Preez, who was appointed Chief Executive Officer on 1 February 2006, qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche in 1990 and has a Master of Commerce degree in Financial Management (including the field of M&A). He has been involved as an entrepreneur in various aspects of the mining industry and among these positions, was an executive director of JIC Mining (Pty) Ltd (JIC) for approximately eight years. JIC was the largest mining services company in South Africa at the time, and employed approximately 20 000 people.
Jan has been part of the Petmin management team since 1992 and has facilitated various BEE transactions in mining and other industries. He is an entrepreneur with a wealth of experience in developing business opportunities and building sustainable management teams.
Bruce Tanner was appointed as Financial Director on 1 July 2009. He joined the Petmin Group in 2005 as Group Financial Manager and Chief Financial Officer and has served on the Petmin Executive Committee since joining the Group.
Bruce obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bcompt (Hons) degree (CTA) from the University of South Africa (Unisa), and qualified as a chartered accountant whilst serving articles at Deloitte & Touche. He has 13 years’ experience in mining finance and administration, five of which include involvement in the marketing of coal and copper. From June 2002 to November 2004, he was the Chief Operating Officer of AfriOre Limited's coal operations and Chief Financial Officer of AfriOre Limited. Bruce has vast experience of mining finance and administration of developmental mining startups and of mature operating mines.
Bradley Doig was appointed a non-executive director of Petmin from 30 November 2005, becoming Chief Operating Officer in February 2006. He was previously an executive director and Chief Investment Officer of Decorum Capital Partners, the fund manager for the New Africa Mining Fund (NAMF). During his 10 years with BHP Billiton Limited, Bradley’s experience included international business development and strategy for Samancor Manganese. He also spent time at merchant bank, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson in the UK and was a group executive of the IQ Business Group.
Bradley is a seasoned deal maker with vast experience in identifying and investing in mining opportunities, focusing on operational efficiency as a key aspect of this process.
Johan was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Somkhele with effect from 1 July 2009. Before being promoted and relocated to Somkhele, Johan was Managing Director of SamQuarz for six years, prior to which he was employed by AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. He holds Bachelor of Technology degrees in Extractive Metallurgy and Environmental Management, which he completed during 1991. He completed an in-house abridged MBL through the University of Stellenbosch during 2000. Johan has 19 years of operational experience in mining, extraction and the processing of various metals and minerals.
Ngwedi was appointed Mine Manager of Somkhele from 1 July 2010. Prior to this appointment, Ngwedi was Mine Manager of SamQuarz and Springlake Colliery. He obtained a national technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering and holds a South African Certificate of Competency for Mine Managers – Coal, as well as a South African Government Certificate of Competency for Mechanical Engineers – Mines and Works. He has also completed the Management Development Programme (MDP) through Unisa. Ngwedi joined Xstrata Coal as a section engineer and was promoted first to the position of colliery engineer and then to Section Manager. Ngwedi has 13 years’ experience in the coal mining industry.
Shehnaaz is the Financial Director of Somkhele. She holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science (BCompt) degree and a Certificate in Mining Taxation, which she obtained from Unisa. Before joining Petmin in 2007, she gained four years’ experience in accounting and auditing at Pricewaterhouse Coopers Inc, where she served her articles of clerkship.
Nico has a national higher diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a South African Government Certificate of Competency in Mining. Before joining Petmin in 2007, Nico was an engineer and Operations Manager with Grinaker–LTA – Metallurgical Operations. He has 16 years’ experience in various mining and metallurgical processes including gold, platinum, heavy minerals, and coal.
Davie’s career in human resources includes positions at SA Communications Services and De Beers. He was Human Resources Manager at amQuarz and went on to become a human resources consultant for various companies in the private sector. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Industrial Psychology, a Trainer’s Development diploma and a diploma in Advanced Labour Law.
Lindelihle joined Petmin in August 2010. He holds three degrees from the University of Zululand, including a Master of Arts in Rural-Urban Sociology. The most recent positions he held before joining Petmin were Enterprise Development Specialist for SAWEN – DTI, Senior Productivity Advisor for Productivity SA, lecturer at the University of Zululand and Business Development Manager for the Maputaland Development and Information Centre.
Neliswa (Nellie) is in her second year of studies for a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management through Unisa. She is the Administration Manager at Somkhele. Nellie was previously employed as Inland Sales Manager at Springlake Colliery. She was responsible for the accounting and control of local debtors in the Springlake Holdings Group and managed local sales customers for the colliery through the full sales cycle of new account management, credit checks, orders, invoicing and cash collection/credit control.
Andre was promoted from Plant Manager to General Manager of SamQuarz with effect from 1 July 2009. He holds a national higher diploma in Extraction Metallurgy which he completed at Technikon Witwatersrand. Before joining SamQuarz in 2006, Andre was employed for 18 years as a metallurgist by AngloGold Ashanti. During this time, he not only gained experience in gold, uranium and sulphuric acid production, but also acquired specific expertise in operations management.
Juanita holds a diploma in Financial Management which was obtained in 1997 through Allenby College. She is currently studying to complete her Bachelor of Commerce degree through Unisa. Juanita has 12 years’ experience in the accounting and management fields within the gold mining industry, and prior to joining the Petmin team, she was the Group Accountant and Administration Manager for Pamodzi Gold Limited.
Johannes joined SamQuarz as Engineering Manager in March 2010. He holds a national diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Technikon Northern Transvaal (Tshwane University of Technology). Other qualifications include Maintenance Management, Project Management and Management Development Programme certificates from the University of Pretoria and Unisa. He is currently enrolled for a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering through Unisa. Johannes was appointed as an inspector of mines at the Department of Mineral Resources and as a section engineer and colliery engineer at Xstrata Coal between July 1998 and March 2010.
