Lebo joined Petmin as a non-executive director in February 2004, becoming an executive director and Deputy Chairperson of Petmin less than two years later.
Lebo is also a director of Lebone Resources (Pty) Ltd, a woman’s empowerment mining company which focuses on mining, beneficiation and consulting. She was an independent non-executive director of Merafe Resources Limited (formerly SA Chrome Limited) until February 2008, a mining company listed on the JSE. She chairs the Petmin transformation committee. Lebo gained experience in gold beneficiation with AngloGold Ashanti Limited where she held two portfolios: marketing manager: responsible for beneficiation and executive assistant to the executive director of marketing.
Jan qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche Inc. in 1990 and has a Master of Commerce degree in Financial Management (including the field of mergers and acquisitions). He has been involved as an entrepreneur in various aspects of the mining industry and was, among other positions, executive director of JIC Mining (Pty) Ltd (JIC) for approximately eight years. JIC was the largest mining services company in South Africa at this time. Jan has been part of the Petmin management team since 1992 and has facilitated various black economic empowerment transactions in the mining and other industries.
Bradley was appointed a non-executive director of Petmin on 30 November 2005, prior to becoming the Chief Operating Officer in February 2006. He was previously an executive director and chief investment officer of Decorum Capital Partners, the fund manager for the New Africa Mining Fund (NAMF). Bradley has 10 years’ experience with BHP Billiton Limited, including international business development and strategy for Samancor Manganese. He also spent time at merchant bank Dresdner Kleinwort Benson in the United Kingdom and was a group executive of the IQ Business Group.
Dawie was the chief executive officer of Petmin for two years from February 2004 until February 2006 before being succeeded by Jan du Preez. Prior to being an executive at Petmin, he was an executive director of JIC and has over 12 years’ experience in the management of operating mining assets. He has been part of the Petmin management team since 1994. Dawie is an admitted attorney and is currently on the roll of non-practising attorneys.
Bruce obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Town and a BCompt (Hons) degree (CTA) from the University of South Africa (Unisa), and qualified as a chartered accountant in South Africa. He has 10 years’ experience in mining finance and administration of which five included involvement in the marketing of coal and copper. From June 2002 to November 2004, Bruce was the chief operating officer of AfriOre Limited’s coal operations and the company’s chief financial officer. AfriOre is a company which listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and has recently been acquired by Lonmin Plc.
Before joining SamQuarz, Johan was employed by AngloGold Ashanti. He holds Bachelor of Technology degrees in Extractive Metallurgy and Environmental Management, which he completed during 1991. He studied for an in-house abridged MBL through the University of Stellenbosch during 2000.
Johan has 16 years of operational experience in the mining, extraction and processing of various metals and minerals.
Marita holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with majors in Financial Accounting and Mathematics and a Higher Education Diploma which she obtained at the University of Stellenbosch. She obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Taxation through Unisa in 2005. She has also completed a Redding Managerial Effectiveness course.
Marita has 16 years’ experience in accounting and financial management in the mining sector, and is a former employee of Samancor Limited where she was initially appointed as an accountant at Lyttelton Dolomite Mine, later moving to head office.
Andre holds a National Higher Diploma in Extraction Metallurgy which he completed at Technikon Witwatersrand.
Before joining SamQuarz, Andre was a plant manager with AngloGold Ashanti, managing one of the largest gold processing plants for the Group. He has 19 years’ experience in gold metallurgy with specific expertise in operations management.
Michael has a National Technical Certificate and two diplomas in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a South African Certificate of Competency in Mining.
Before joining SamQuarz, Michael was an engineer with AngloGold Ashanti from 1998 to 2005, occupying the position of section engineer prior to his departure.
Mark graduated from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Mining Engineering. He also has a Graduate Diploma in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, and holds SA Mine Managers’ Government Certificates of Competency for Metalliferous, Diamond and Coal mines.
With 24 years’ experience in operations, construction and project management, Mark has been involved in major projects such as the Columbus Stainless Steel expansion and the Mossgas onshore projects. He also has vast practical experience in metalliferous and coal mines in Africa.
Ricky had a PhD conferred on him in 2007 by the University of Porto in Portugal for a thesis entitled Springlake Anthracite - Characterisation and Potential Industrial Utilisation (a short summary of the thesis appears on page 20) (PDF - 1.13MB). He holds a degree in Geology (equivalent to an Honours degree as certified by the South African Qualifications Authority) from the same university. His area of speciality then was organic petrology. A leading authority on coal classification, characterisation and utilisation, Ricky has extensive knowledge of South African coal resources and their potential uses, built up over 27 years in the field.
Nico has a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a South African Certificate of Competency in Mining.
Before joining Petmin, Nico was an engineer and operations manager with Grinaker-LTA Metallurgical Operations. He has 15 years’ experience in various mining and metallurgical processes including gold, platinum and heavy minerals.
Tobie has a National N5 Certificate in Engineering.
Tobie joined Springlake in 1993 as a qualified millwright. He became engineering foreman and later general engineering supervisor. He was transferred to Somkhele in 2006 as a dispatch and infrastructure manager. Tobie has 14 years’ experience in the coal mining industry.
Hardus has a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining from the University of Pretoria. He holds the SA Mine Managers’ Government Certificate of Competency both for metalliferous and coal mines. He spent four months as an exchange student in Germany on coal mines in the Thyssen Schachtbau group. He joined Gold Fields of SA after graduating, working on most of the company’s gold fields as well as Greenside Colliery. At the time that he left Gold Fields, he was the underground manager at the West Driefontein Gold Mine. Before joining Springlake, he was the chief operating officer for contracting firm, JIC Mining.
Hardus has 26 years’ mining experience in the gold, platinum and coal mining sectors.
Ngwedi obtained the National Technical Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and holds the SA Government Certificate of Competency for Mechanical Engineers - Mines and Works. He has also completed the Management Development Programme (MDP) through Unisa.
He joined Xstrata Coal as a section engineer and was promoted first to the position of colliery engineer and then to section manager. In total, Ngwedi has 13 years’ experience in the coal mining industry.
Aldre holds a BCompt degree which he obtained at the University of the Free State. He completed a BCompt (Hons) degree through the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Aldre also passed the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants board exam (part 1), and is currently furthering his studies at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Before joining Springlake, Aldre gained two years’ financial management experience in the manufacturing industry.
Hannes has worked in the gold mining industry from 1985, furthering his studies in industrial relations and personnel management.
Hannes joined Springlake Colliery in 1991 and is very experienced in the field of human resources development. He is responsible for all labour relations, health and safety compliance and mine administration matters. He is the company’s appointed representative at the Chamber of Mines of South Africa.
